Grey Black Smokey eye TUTORIAL

Hi everyone!

Today I’m doing a tutorial on grey/black smokey eyes that I had worn for my previous post HERE.

Smokey eyes using Bourjois black glitter liner

This is the completed look –

Finished look- grey black smokey eye

Products used (in order) :

1. BeYu eye base

2. Maybelline Shadow stylist loose powder eyeshadow in shade ‘Sultry Black’

3. Jordana Incolor matte eyeshadow in shade 02 Black Tie Affair

4. Faces eyeshadow brush

5. Maybelline chai latte quad for brow bone highlight shade

6. Lotus Herbals Kajal

7. Bourjois Glitter Fizz eyeliner in black

8. Maybelline Colossal Volume mascara

Products used for grey black smokey eye

Swatches (top: with primer , bottom :without primer )- L-R : Maybelline Shadow stylist (sultry black) , Jordana Incolor black eyeshadow, Brow bone color Maybelline chai latte quad

Step 1:  Priming

This is a very important step to bring out the color of the eyeshadow and help it stay longer. The Maybelline shadow stylist loose powder eyeshadow I’m using here (the shade name is ‘Sultry black’ but since its a grey color, I’ll be referring to it as the grey shade) barely shows up and has crazy fallout if I don’t use a base underneath. Its very difficult to work with this shadow – it doesn’t blend, it creases a lot- but this is the only matte grey in my collection right now so I’m using this. You can also do this look working only with a matte black eyeshadow.

Apply a small amount of primer over entire lid right up to the brow and also on the lower lash line. Allow it to get absorbed.

Step 1: Priming

Step 2: Lid color

Apply grey eyeshadow all over the lid extending it a little outwards at the outer corner.

Step 2: Grey Shadow

Step 3:  Outer corner

Apply the matte black eyeshadow on the outer corner forming a ‘V’ and using a fluffy blending brush , start blending the grey and black. The Maybelline shadow stylist in grey that I am using is a nightmare to blend. I used some loose powder to aid the blending but it hardly helped.  I had to keep applying more and more and for some reason it kept vanishing- where I do not know- the brush, or my skin ? :-\

Step 3: Outer corner and Blending

Step 4: Lower lash line and brow bone

Use a thin brush (pencil or angular) apply some grey eyeshadow along the lower lash line. You don’t need to too careful as you can always clean up and get the precision you desire using a Q-tip later on.

At this stage, the eye just looks surrounded by an untidy mess of grey and black. Apply a little highlighter on the brow bone. You can also simply use some loose powder. I have used brow bone highlight shade from Maybelline chai latte quad.

Step 4: More grey e/s on lid and lower lash line

Step 5: Clean up!

Now this is the step that will give more definition to the eye. Using a moistened Q tip- clean up the excess on the lower lash, inner corner and outer corner. To give the ‘lift’ to your eyes, clean up the outer corner along a line joining the outer most corner of the eye to the outer tip of the eyebrow as shown by the red line in the picture.

Step 5: Clean up

Step 5 : Clean up

Step 6: Apply kajal, liner and mascara

Apply loads of kajal on the lower lash line and tightline the upper line. Loads of kajal blending into the grey/black on the lower lash line is very important for the smokey eye. Apply winged liner – here I am using Bourjois Glitter Fizz liner in shade Black Star. It has beautiful silver shimmer and you can read my review on it HERE. Apply 2 coats of mascara to finish up.

Step 6: Kajal, Liner and mascara

Now you can see that the Maybelline Shadow stylist has managed to vanish from my lid again. I am not going to bother with it  (Sorry Maybelline, but this is one of worst eyeshadows I have come across!! ) I am just going to pat a little of the matte black eye shadow on my lid to finish up the look. Smudge the sharp line on the outer corner slightly with brush/finger.

Adding black eye shadow on lid

Here’s the finished Grey Black Smokey Eye look

Grey black smokey eye

Tips for creating Smokey eyes :

1. Blending! There should not be harsh lines, the eyeshadow at the lid and crease should fade out slowly towards the brow bone.

2. Lower lash line : Apply the colors you are using on the lid to the lower lash line also about 3/4th of the way starting from outer corner.

3. Kajal and tightlining : Apply lots of kajal and let it blend with the lower lash line. Tightlining also brings out the smokey look.

4.Black base:  Smudge black eye pencil like MAC smolder or Revlon crayon on the eyelid before applying the shadow to bring out the color of the lid eyeshadow. You don’t need to use eyeliner if you are using this technique. I have used it to create a Blue Smokey eye look in my post HERE.  I have not used it here since the Maybelline Shadow stylist didn’t work well with this method at all.

5. Outer corner : Extend the eyeshadow beyond the crease and upwards at the outer corners. Blend it outwards and upwards. Don’t end it abruptly at the crease and corner.

Lakme True Wear nail color #D416 Review + NOTD

Hi everyone!

Today I’m reviewing ‘Lakme True wear nail color’ in shade ‘Freespirit #D416 Manish Malhotra‘.

Price : Rs 90

Quantity: 9 ml

Packaging: It comes in a square bottom bottle with rounded edges with a square type cap – the standard Lakme nail paint packaging. The brush if of good quality and application is easy.

Lakme true wear nail color #D416 Manish Malhotra

Consistency :  The consistency is very good. Single coat gives even glossy color on the nails.  Application of 2 coats further deepens the color.

The only problem I had with this nail paint was that in the bottle it appeared  like a deep reddish pink but on the nails it turned out to be a maroon color- more red than how it appeared in the bottle. Since a tester was not available when I had purchased it, I could not see the shade on my nails.

Lakme has recently launched another range of nail paints – ‘Nine to Five’ long wear nail color which are priced at Rs 180. These must have amazing staying power because the regular range of Lakme itself stays on without chipping for 4-6 days depending on the handling.

Staying Power: I had applied 2 coats of this nail paint without a top coat and it has barely chipped except a little bit at the tips after 5 days.

Lakme true wear nail color #D416 Manish Malhotra (with FLASH)

Lakme true wear nail color #D416 Manish Malhotra (without FLASH)

The GOOD about Lakme true wear nail color #D416

1. Sturdy packaging with good quality brush

2. Doesn’t chip upto 5-6 days even without top coat

3. Good consistency, single coat sufficient to give glossy color to nails

4. Reasonable drying time ( doesn’t dry super fast like Lotus nail enamels but not very slow like Maybelline either )

5. Decent pricing for the quality

The NOT-SO-GOOD about Lakme true wear nail color #D416

1. The color didn’t turn out the same on the nails  as in the bottle in case of this shade.

Will I repurchase it? Yes, even though the shade didn’t turn out as expected but I still like it. I like Lakme nail paints and will continue to use them.

Final Verdict: It is a good quality nail paint with even consistency, good quality brush and very good staying power. It dries reasonably fast and single coating required to get desired shade. This particular shade is very flattering to the nails and anyone who likes red, maroon nail paints should give this a try.

Rating: 4.5/5 (for difference in color on the nails and in the bottle)

Bourjois Glitter Fizz Eyeliner Review + FOTD

Hi everyone!

Today I’m reviewing Bourjois Glitter Fizz eyeliner in shade #31 Black Star.

Bourjois is a French based cosmetic brand that has recently started gaining popularity in the Indian cosmetic arena. You will generally find a small counter of Bourjois among the crowded Maybelline,  Revlon and Lakme  counters at Lifestyle stores. This eyeliner is one of my first experiences with this brand and so far, I’m really liking their products.

Bourjois Glitter fizz eyeliner is a water-resistant liquid eyeliner with fine silver glitter particles suspended in it. It comes in many colors but the website says only black and green. I have seen it in navy blue too.

Image from Bourjois website- Black glitter liner

Price : Rs 525

Quantity :  2.5 ml

Information from the website :

“FIZZ GLITTER LINER

SPARKLE UNDER THOSE SPOTLIGHTS!

Ultra resistant eyeliner in black and vibrant green.

With Added glitter for a look Which Will make you sparkle from under the spotlights at a party.
Easy to apply and comfortable to wear. For irresistible party doe-eyes.”

Packaging:It comes in a sleek long tapering plastic bottle. The bottle is colored according to the color of the eyeliner. Since I have this product in black, the bottle is black colored with fine silver shimmer particles embedded in the plastic, much like the eyeliner. The handle is long and has a brush of decent quality though I feel the brush could have been better. Nevertheless, the brush is good enough for easy application.

The bottle contains an opening which is not very well visible from outside, but you can feel its there when you are taking out the brush because a little pressure is required to pull it through that opening. It feels like its made of thick rubber or some soft plastic. It ensures that if the bottle sometime topples over, no product will spill out and be wasted. It also ensures that just the right amount of product comes out on the brush. The quantity pulled out once is enough to draw a thick line on the one eye.

Bourjois Glitter Fizz liner- Black

Bourjois Glitter Fizz liner- BRUSH

Consistency: It has the consistency of a typical liquid eyeliner. It is thick, not too runny and has fine silver glitter particles which are well suspended in a black base liquid and do not separate out of the liquid. The glitter particles are not chunky and not abrasive on the eyes.  The consistency is just right for easy and comfortable application.

Pigmentation: The black of the liner is a well pigmented black and the glitter  particles are uniformly distributed in the liquid. It dries fast and is water-resistant. It does not smudge.  I tried it on my hand without anything underneath and also with  Maybelline black gel eyeliner as base and it looked a little better with the base but on the eyes it looks the same.

It gives a nice glittery effect to the eyes which is ideal for evening parties but the shimmer doesn’t look OTT if worn in the day. Worn alone or with eyeshadow- it looks great either way.

Bourjois Glitter Fizz liner- Swatches (left: without base, right : with black gel liner as base)

Staying Power: The staying power of this eyeliner is awesome. I’ve worn it for 6-7 hours with no fading or smudging. It comes off only when removed with an oil based makeup remover. I used coconut oil to remove it.

Here’s how it looked on my eyes with grey/black eyeshadow-

Bourjois black glitter liner

Bourjois black glitter liner

The GOOD about Bourjois Glitter Fizz liner

  • Good consistency, neither too runny nor too thick
  • Good sturdy packaging and decent quality brush
  • Water-resistant and smudge-proof
  • Very good staying power
  • Comes off easily with oil based makeup remover
  • Opthalmologically tested, did not cause any irritation to my eyes
  • Glitter particles uniformly suspended in liquid, not abrasive to the eyes
  • Good pigmentation
  • One dip on the bottle gives enough product for one eye
  • Can be worn in the daytime or evening

The NOT-SO-GOOD about Bourjois Glitter Fizz liner

  • Pricey. I find it a little expensive for a small bottle.
  • The brush could have been a little better at this price.
  • Ingredients are not listed anywhere on the packaging or the website though it just says opthalmologically tested.

Here’s the look I did today using this eyeliner. Its a grey smokey eye with black at the corners and crease paired with Revlon Colorburst Lipstick in ‘Crimson’ sheered out with lip balm. The best lip to go with this eye would most likely be a nude peachy pink but I wanted to see how sheered out  Crimson would look with this.

FOTD with Bourjois black glitter liner and Revlon Colorburst 'Crimson'

Final Verdict: Its a good product, a little pricey though but a very wearable glitter eyeliner that can be worn in the day as well as for an evening party. The consistency, pigmentation, staying power is very good. Its not an essential but you can definitely go for it if you like glittery eyeliners. The product will not disappoint you.

Will I repurchase it? Not at this price. If its on discount, will definitely try out the other shades.

Rating : 4.25/5 ( for the reasons listed above )

It has the shade number and name printed on end and the other end is blank. It has a silver rose on the cap as in the pic which is the trademark of Chambor products.

The lipstick tip is curved to fit with the curve of the lips for easier application. I find the packaging very elegant but there’s no way to determine which shade is inside from outside which is a drawback.

Outer Carton- Chambor Silk Touch Lipstick

Chambor Silk Touch Lipstick

Texture: The most special thing about Chambor lipsticks is their texture. They are super soft and glide on the lips like butter.

Pigmentation: They are very pigmented and give full coverage in a single swipe. Since they are so soft , they can be mixed with lip balm to give just a tint also.

Chambor Silk Touch Lipstick - 'Silk woods'

Finish: They are matte finish but since they are so creamy, they give a very moisturized almost slighly glossy look to the lips on application. They don’t feel heavy on the lips and are very comfortable to wear.

Moisturization: They are highly moisturizing and even after few hours of application, lips feel soft.

Ingredients: They contain Beeswax, Shea Butter, Castor oil and other waxes as well which explains their moisturization properties.

Ingredient - Chambor Silk Touch Lipstick

Staying Power: The SA claimed that these are long wearing but I’m not sure about how long wearing they are. I would guess upto 4 hours max since they are so creamy. I had a meal while I had it on and 2-3 hours later, it was still there. When they fade, they leave an even tint on the lips and don’t settle into fine lines after a long time. Don’t feather or bleed though cannot say for sure about the darker shades but it is always better to wear with lip liner.

Scent: The scent of these lipsticks reminds me of freshly baked cookies. It is not an overpowering scent but its not very mild either. People with sensitive olfactory senses who like their lipsticks  to be unscented might not like it.

Shade Selection: They have 18 shades covering browns, pinks, mauves and darker shades too (from website). Chambor lipsticks in general have shades that never look too garish or OTT. I think almost all shades would suit Indian skin tones well as most of them have a brownish or pinkish undertone.

About shade #670 ‘Silk Woods’ : It is a nude shade with an earthy pink undertone. Single swipe gives full pigmentation and coverage as you can see in the swatches below. This shade should suit most Indian skin tones upto maybe NC 42.  Duskier skin tones might find it a tad light for them. I find this to be the perfect nude shade for me( I am NC 37/40 in MAC )

The NOT-SO-GOOD about Chambor ‘Silk Touch Lipsticks’
